Don’t tempt me!

March 8, 2008

As parents we are constantly trying to find ways to motivate our children.  It was in that effort that I told Jacob and Allie that I would give them $50 if they stopped biting their fingernails.  (A habit they unfortunately picked up from me!)  We were in the car on the way to school and they immediately got excited about the prospect of getting to spend this amount of money.  The conversation went back and forth about how they are going to spend their money.  By this time we were arriving at school and I told them to get ready.  As they were about ready to get out for school Allie says excitedly, “Let the temptation begin!”

I laughed the whole way to work.  But it got me thinking about temptation.  How often do we actually invite temptation into our lives?   We should stay as far away as possible from sin in an effort to avoid temptation.

Matt 26:41
41    “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” (NIV)

Our children have such a way of “teaching” us, don’t they? It wasn’t until I had a toddler myself that I truly understood the meaning of “born a sinner”. There are things Kate does or says that I know 100% no one taught her…she was just born with it. As a parent, I pray against the sin nature that she and Adam were born with but often forget to pray that for myself. Thank you for reminding me of this verse for myself.
